Festivals of India

India is known as aland of div
ersity. Here we have people of all religions,castes and creeds. All of them have their own festivals to celebrate. Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhist and Christmas celebrate their own religious festivals throughout the year.

       But they celebrate their festivals all together, with a feeling of love and unity. A family day set aside for brothers and sisters is very popular

On that day, a sister ties a bracelet on her from harm during the coming year.

The sister puts a small circle of red powder on the brother's forehead. Brothers give present to their sisters and make a pledge to take care of them.
     Da festival of  lights that takes place in October or November. It honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty . Stores ant houses are cleaned and decorated with lights . The streets and building sparkle with row of lights During the festival,it is believed that Lakshmi bring good luck to well- lights place. People visit each other and exchange gifts of sweet and other things. The Holi celebration in March is one of India's most colourful holidays.     
People throw coloured chalk and water on friends and strangers as they walk along the streets. People sing and dance. Pongal is a festival to give thanks for the rice harvest and for the rain. Coloured rice power and chalk are used to paint designs inside and outside of the house.

Indians consider cattle sacred. During pongal, cattle are honouredo for their work during the year. On the third day of the festival, the cattle are bathed. Their horns and often painted blue and gold. Rings of flowers are draped around the cattle's neck and colourful feathers are draped  around the cattle's necks and colourful feathers are tied around their heads.
An exciting contest is held during the festival. Money is tried around a bull's neck and on the bull's forehead. Men try to take the money from the bull without being injured by the bull's horns. On August 15, we celebrate our Independence Day. On 
this day, India was granted independence from the British rule. Festivals are an important part of life in India. They bring colour and charm in life and serve as a unifying factor in the society.
